It is our belief that online communities like Facebook are splintering into smaller niche communities where people with similar interests can interact and learn. These niche communities can also be called Tribes, as Seth Godin points out in his new book Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us

You can create and manage your own tribe with a membership site or at a bare minimum a customer email list.

Many content experts such as yourself are busy consulting, teaching, speaking or other tasks and frankly don’t have much time to create a membership site. The problem is this keeps you enslaved in the ‘get paid by the hour’ trap.

In order to get out of this trap, you need to make time to create a membership site where you provide access to courses, videos, etc. You’ll need to create a structure for your content. You could even give your materials to someone else to organize or at least upload to the website. This one time effort will result in years of potential recurring revenue, so it is well worth the effort. Get up an hour earlier every day until you have a basic structure. Take a break from teaching for a week or so. Tell someone how your content should be organized and pay them to do set up a membership for you.

Then you can direct every person you teach, speak to or consult with to your membership site. Over time you will build a vibrant community of customers who can interact with you and each other. Your site will build better and more content over time based on feedback from your members. So get out there and get your membership site going!
